The Provincial Kata Committee will be offering instructions in kata on Tuesdays starting at 6:00pm MST sharp and ending at 7:25pm. Each session will build on the previous one.

  • All candidates for Competitive and Technical stream must enter their application into the on-line system https://judocanada.org/grading/ no LATER than October 18, 2025.
  • Refer to the Judo Alberta website https://judoalberta.com/index.php/grading-kata/ for information about black belt grading and the 2025 National Grading Syllabus https://judocanada.org/grading-2/. 
  • Candidates should obtain their head instructor’s approval before making the application. Both have a responsibility to ensure the information entered is accurate and verified. Do not claim for ineligible tournaments or for partial years.
  • Shodan candidates have the responsibility of ensuring their ikkyu (brown belt) registration date agrees with the Judo Alberta registrar’s records (as evidenced by the Judo Alberta Certificate of Promotion). Contact the Judo Alberta Registrar if any questions. All Shodan candidates (including Competitive Stream) must do a formal exam.
  • All candidates must have a Judo Canada passport and bring it to the grading. If you need to order a passport, then go to https://judocanada.org/judo-canada-passport/ 
  • Candidates must wear white judogi only.
  • No electronic recording during any Yudansha grading session. However, grading sessions are open to the public. 
NCCP DOJO INSTRUCTOR COURSE 

NCCP DOJO INSTRUCTOR COURSE 

Judo Alberta will be holding an NCCP Dojo Instructor course on Oct 4-5, 2025, in Edmonton.  

The “Instructor” course provides the participant with knowledge to teach the technical, physical, mental, social and other aspects of judo. The course prepares the participant to be a club instructor and be responsible for providing judoka with the basic physical literacy skills with emphasis on children under the age of 14, judo skills as described in the Judo Canada syllabus, and to introduce young judoka to competition.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Minimum rank of brown belt with a working knowledge of the judo techniques included in the Judo Canada kyu syllabus.
  • Trained DA or Trained Community Coach.
  • Sterling background check for all candidate coaches who are 18 years old and older via Sterling Agency – for details see: https://www.sterlingtalentsolutions.ca/landing-pages/j/judo-canada/;

OR equivalent if such checks are required by the Province/Territory. In cases where the Sterling agency is not used for this service, results of the background check must be communicated to Judo Canada to NCCP@judocanada.org by the individual coaches or P/T offices.

The Backcheck is required only if the check done for the DA was done more than 3 years earlier.

Successful online completion of a “Respect in Sport for the activity leader” e-learning module available at https://judo-canada-al.respectgroupinc.com/ for all candidates who did not complete this module in the past

2026 Judo Alberta Provincial Championships – Bids Now Open

Judo Alberta is accepting bid applications from clubs interested in hosting the 2026 Provincial Championships. This is a great opportunity to showcase your club and contribute to the growth of judo in Alberta!

📝 Key Info:

  • Clubs must submit a completed bid package sent to judo@judoalberta.com by August 10, 2025.
  • Event dates of April 11 & 12, 2026, or within one week before or after.
  • The Executive Committee will review and announce the host by September 1.

  2. Suitable venue:
    1. Minimum 2–3 mats + warm-up area
    2. Seating for 200+ people
  3. Volunteers to run the event
  4. List of past hosting experience
  5. Referee and safety standards must be met

  8. Provide lunch for volunteers, referees, and coaches

Alberta athletes are invited to attend the Judo BC Summer Camp at UBC’s War Memorial Gym in Vancouver. Judo Alberta coaches will be on site to support our athletes.

  • Cost: $350 (includes accommodations, meals & camp fee)
  • Location: War Memorial Gym, UBC
  • Accommodations: Place Vanier Student Residence
  • Ages: 11+
  • Belt Requirements:
    • U14 & U16: Orange belt+
    • U18 & older: Green belt+
  • Camp Focus: Judo, fitness, strength & conditioning, and testing for the 2025–26 season

NCCP Competition Development Course

Anyone wishing to advance their coaching to the next level should check out the Competition Development course coming September 12-14 in Burnaby, BC.   Please review the eligibility criteria below to ensure you qualify for the course.  Candidates must complete prerequisite courses and be training provincial level athletes. 

Eligibility: 

  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Minimum rank of Shodan with a working knowledge of the judo techniques included in the Judo Canada syllabus (up to and including Shodan).
  • Trained Dojo Instructor (or former level 2).
  • A letter of recommendation from the provincial/territorial association stating that the participant works with developing competitors at the Provincial level, and meets the technical requirements.
  • Completion of the prerequisites (see below) –  Multisport Competition Development modules and online evaluations where required.
  • Successful online completion of a “Respect in Sport for the activity leader” e-learning module available at https://judo-canada-al.respectgroupinc.com/ for all candidates who did not complete this module in the past.
  • Current, maximum 3 years old  Criminal Background Check. If needed, available at: » Judo Canada (sterlingbackcheck.ca)

Prerequisites – MULTISPORT MODULES  offered by Provincial Sport Organizations . You can register for these modules here: albertasport.ca/coaching/nccp-multi-sport-coaching-modules/ 

These modules are delivered in a multisport environment and are not integrated into Sport Specific format.

  1. Developing Athletic Abilities;
  2. Prevention and Recovery;
  3. Conflict Management – followed by an online evaluation;
  4. Leading Drug-free Sport – followed by an online evaluation;
  5. Psychology of Performance;
  6. Coaching and Leading Effectively.
