National Training Camp

To all Judo Clubs:

There is a National Training Camp after the Pacific International Tournament in Richmond B.C this year.
The training camp will run from Monday March 8th- Wednesday morning March 11th, 2015.

Each club is responsible for travel arrangements and accommodations for the tournament, but Judo Alberta is sending a provincial coach for the training and will be booking rooms specifically for the camp Monday- Wednesday and these athletes will be chaperoned and taken care of by the Judo Alberta coach.

Please let Laurie Wiltshire know who from your club will be attending the camp and if you need a hotel room with Judo Alberta from Monday-Wednesday by January 31st, 2015.

This camp is a good opportunity to train with athletes outside of Judo Alberta and for our younger athletes U14 and U16 to have an experience at a National training camp so close to home.

Thank you

Laurie Wiltshire

Edmonton International Judo Championship 2105

January 10th, 2015

Dear fellow Judoka,

The Edmonton International Organizing Committee is pleased to confirm that the Edmonton International Judo Championship will take place March 13th, 14th, and 15th, 2015 at our unique venue, West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This is now our 10th year as a high quality Judo Canada A level tournament. We note the selection of Edmonton as the site of the 2015 Pan American Championships is based on the historical success and quality of judo demonstrated at our Edmonton International.

It is our opinion that this tournament will provide athletes a tremendous opportunity to obtain valuable national and international experience while limiting travel costs and associated time zone issues due to accessibility, proximity and location in North America. We believe that the tournament’s three day format facilitates travel time for all participants, as well as well placed tournament match times. It also ensures that participants, coaches and families have the opportunity to partake in the shopping and special events aspects of the largest indoor shopping center in North America, West Edmonton Mall. www.westedmontonmall.com.

For those not in attendance these past few years, the West Edmonton Mall venue, provides a unique opportunity for the display and understanding of our sport, as a result of the 100,000 + people per day walking around the enclosed but open air tournament site. Please review our website www.edmontonjudo.com for pictures of this very dynamic tournament environment.

In addition to an incredible array of competitors, over 700 in 2014, which benefit from cash prize funding for divisional winners of the Senior Women’s and Men’s Brown & Black divisions, we have a number of other events coinciding with the tournament including:

Kata Camp: This is the most popular Kata competition in Western Canada, and we want you to participate in the competition and the subsequent Kata camp! Nage-no Kata, Ju-no-Kata, Katame-no-Kata Kime-No- Kata and Kodokan Goshinjutsu are all being offered. If you wish to improve your Kata this is your opportunity! For details email Gord Okamura gokamura@telus.net

Kata Judge Seminar: If you wish to Judge Kata in the future, Judo Canada is putting on a kata Judge seminar, evaluation, and examination in conjunction with the tournament which is open to Nidan and above but requires Provincial recommendation. The Kata evaluation will be completed on Goshin Jitsu and Katame no Kata. Please contact Judo Canada’s Representatives Fred Blaney Fred.Blaney@gnb.ca or Gerald Poirier at gerald_poirier@videotron.ca

Referee Symposium: Run also by IJF Referees. A full evening of detailed assessment of what is changing in today’s judo and how you as a ref, or you as a coach or a fighter, can adjust your game to move forward with these changes. If you are in the competitive sport of judo, you need to attend.

Judo Canada Online Club Management Seminar: an informational session for Senseis and organizers alike, Judo Canada will discuss some automation options that may be very useful to help you simplify and grow your judo club. Put on by Judo Canada representatives it should prove enlightening to those in attendance.

There are a number of other unique Judo related events scheduled which we hope to announce soon, but without question the Edmonton International provides the best opportunity for all to immerse one’s self in our sport from many perspectives. It is not just a tournament but a multi day judo learning opportunity with your peers.
We have negotiated hotel packages for participants and members of their travel teams which are included in the tournament package on our website www.edmontonjudo.com . Additionally, any further information or tournament package revisions will be uploaded on our website, as they become available. If you have any questions in the short term I would be pleased to respond by email.
Please mark your calendars, adjust your budgets, and plan to travel this March 13th, 14th, and 15th 2015 to the Edmonton International Judo Championship. . . truly a unique Judo tournament experience.
Yours in Judo,

Mark Hicks
Tournament Director

(OTTAWA) Judo Canada is pleased to announce that the city of Calgary, Alberta has been selected from a process in which over 10 cities were involved to be host to the 2016-18 National Judo Championships. The event will be held at the Calgary Oval in May of each of 2016, 2017 and 2018.

“We are excited that Calgary has been named as host city for Judo Canada’s national championships for the next three years,” says Marco De Iaco, Vice President of Sales, Sports & Major Events with Tourism Calgary. “With more than 650 athletes, coaches, officials and delegates participating in the competition, this event brings both economic and social benefits to our community. We look forward to welcoming everyone involved to Calgary.”

Judo Canada president, Mike Tamura was ecstatic with the outcome; “Judo Canada undertook this event bid process to enable a greater link with not only the local judo community, but also the greater community-at-large that will host these events. Several cities presented competitive and compelling proposals for which we are thankful and appreciative of the recognition our opportunity provided. By securing the hosting rights for 2016-18, Calgary and the athletes that will take part in this event gain security in knowledge for event planning and participation so as to deliver a flawless event. We are hoping that some of the athletes that take part in these events will not only represent Canada on the world circuit in the future, but also bring home medals in Rio 2016 and also Tokyo 2020.”
