Provincial Referee Development Grant
Purpose:
To encourage members to pursuit refereeing. Two grants will be available in the amount of $250 each, one for southern Alberta and one for northern Alberta.
Grant Timeline:
September 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020
Provincial Minimum Requirements:
- Must be U16 and up.
- Minimum green belt or higher.
- Must be a member in good standing with Judo Alberta.
- Must have officiated two (2) regional tournaments (ex: Lethbridge or EYJS monthly)
- Must pass their provincial C referee examination
- Must have officiated a minimum three (3) of the following tournaments in the U14 categories and below:
- Red Deer tournament
- U of A
- Rocky Mountain
- Florence Senda
- Katsuta Cup
- Provincials
If there are more than one candidate in an area, the referee committee will choose the winner based on ability.

NCCP Dojo Assistant Course (Nov 29-Dec 1, 2019)
This Learning Experience prepares the participant to assist in delivery of judo practices for judo players of all stages of development, with an emphasis on participants under 13 years old. It is recommended that the assistant work under the supervision of a certified Instructor. Assistants under the age of majority must work under the direct supervision of a certified instructor.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum age of 16.
- Minimum rank of green belt with a working knowledge of the judo techniques included in the DA program and as identified by the Judo Canada Kyu syllabus.
- Sterling Backcheck for all Candidates/coaches who are 18 years old and older via Sterling Agency – for details see: https://pages.sterlingbackcheck.ca/landing-pages/j/judo-canada/ OR equivalent as such checks that are required by the Province/Territory. In cases where the Sterling agency is not used for this service, results of the Background Check must be communicated to Judo Canada to NCCP@judocanada.org by the individual coach or their P/T offices.
- Successful online completion of a “Respect in Sport for the activity leader” e-learning module available at

2019-2020 Membership Registration Information
Judo Alberta Membership,
IMPORTANT: All clubs need to be registered before October 15 along with a minimum of 10 members to not be charged $100 club fee by JC. Please use this registration link https://www.trackie.com/JudoAB/
Judo Canada registration/accident insurance expires August 31. Therefore, it is imperative that on-line registrations and payment reach Judo Alberta on or before September 30, 2019. Judo Alberta and Judo Canada registration fees are non-refundable once submitted on Trackie.
NOTE: JUDO CANADA HAS IMPLEMENTED A CLUB FEE OF $100 TO THOSE CLUBS WHO DO NOT HAVE 10 OR MORE MEMBERS REGISTERED BEFORE OCTOBER 15, 2019.
JUDO ALBERTA/JUDO CANADA FEE SCHEDULE
- Online registration AND payment must both be received before members are properly registered and in good standing with Judo Alberta and Judo Canada. If both are not received, registrations are not valid which could disallow athletes participating in provincials, nationals, internationally, training camps or other related events. Insurance coverage is also not in place for those members.
- If a club or its members are not registered and wish to participate in a tournament/event, both the online registration and payment must be submitted a minimum of 14 days prior to that tournament/ event so Judo Canada membership cards can be generated.
CLUB INFORMATION – To be completed and submitted to the Registrar (registrar@judoalberta.com) and Judo Alberta (judo@judoalberta.com) so Club information is up to date. All Judo Alberta clubs are required to have their members sign a liability waiver. For the safety of each club, be sure to have current members sign a waiver and ensure any new members thereafter also sign a waiver. If you have any questions or need assistance creating a waiver, please contact the Judo Alberta office.
MEMBER INFORMATION – Each member can complete this form to assist the Club in completing Judo Canada’s online registration. DO NOT send this form to the Registrar or Judo Alberta offices; it is strictly for club use.
Encourage members who may be FNMI (First Nations, Metis, Inuit) or have a disability to indicate this on their form or on-line registration. This information can assist in funding and programs.
PIPEDA & CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT – Each club member should complete this document. The original is kept by the Club with access by Judo Alberta should the need arise. A PIPEDA Agreement for members does not need to be completed each year; just once for as long as they are a member. Judo Alberta only needs to be provided with a copy of the Exclusion List.
The Confidentiality Agreement needs to be completed by all club members who have access to personal information within the club structure. This would include the coaches and registrar, as well as any board members who have access to private contact or medical information. Time should be taken by the registrar and/or head coach to reinforce the importance of maintaining the privacy of all athletes, volunteers and coaches.
PROMOTIONS— Promotion form is to be filled out completely including qualified Examiner/Sponsor indicated. Both this form and payment need to be received before Promotions will be registered and processed. All Promotions must be registered with Judo Alberta; unregistered promotions could cause delays or fines (ie. Shodan grading, tournament registrations, Nationals, Alberta Winter Games, Canada Winter Games, etc.).

Judo Alberta Elite Athlete Finding Announcement
The Judo Alberta Coaching Committee would like to congratulate the following athletes who have been granted elite athlete funding. Funding is based on performance, results, commitment to training, participation in National or International events and financial need. SUCCESSFUL NATIONALS IN EDMONTON
Edmonton, May 19, 2019 – Sunday was the third and last day of the Canadian Open Judo Championships in Edmonton, Alberta. The Butterdome of the University of Alberta saw the senior athletes battle it out to win the remaining national titles.
This year’s edition saw numerous young athletes having success in an older category, like Isabelle Harris (-63 kg), from Abbotsford Judo Club, in British Columbia. “It wasn’t easy today, because it was my second day fighting, so I was sore and tired,” she said. “I had a little more trouble getting into it at the beginning, but the level was about the same as yesterday, and it went better as the day went by.” It was a fifth participation at Nationals for the 17-year-old, but a first experience in the senior category. She’s planning on going home to rest and heal minor injuries before the Canada Cup in Montreal at the end of June. “I’m going to have to keep working hard in training, because winning doesn’t mean I’m perfect, and it doesn’t mean that they won’t win next time!”
Gabriel Juteau, from Club de judo Boucherville in Quebec, won the honours in the -73 kg category. This was a very satisfying medal, knowing that he switched from -66 kg to -73 kg this year. “I had won the gold medal in senior a few years ago, but in -66 kg. I was very happy to see I could still win in -73 kg,” he commented. “I started off a little slow, but it’s always like that, and the final was the fight I felt the best and the most confident.”
After two days in second place, the province of Quebec was finally able to catch up with Alberta and be first on the medal count once again. Their lead is slowly getting smaller, but for now, their crown is still intact.

The Organizing Committee, a Well-Oiled Machine
Kelly Thornton, president of the Edmonton Organizing Committee, was very happy and proud to see the results of his team’s hard work over the last few days. While he was a member of the organizing committee in Calgary for the past 3 years, it was his first time as the president, and he feels lucky to be surrounded by such a fantastic team.
“Some members of the committee were also there for Calgary, so we were able to use all their feedback to improve the experience in Edmonton. The venue was great, the lighting allowed for some phenomenal pictures, the bleachers were close to the mats so the crowd could really see all the action. I’ve heard nothing but good comments from everyone during the weekend,” he said.
“The amount of work accomplished by the committee members and the volunteers is impressive. It’s a big event, and we always want to add new things to make it a little better than it was before. We had some core members from last year’s committee who also were here in Edmonton, especially Allan Sattin. He was the Chair in Calgary, and he was a great help to fix any issue we might have. We also had a really good working relationship with Judo Canada. They have been really busy working for the Montreal Grand Prix, but they were still available for us whenever we needed them, and they really stepped up to the plate when they got here.”
The Canadian Open Judo Championships will be in Edmonton for another two years, with the next edition being on May 14-17, 2020.
