NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE COACH

As many of you know, Fatira Merah stepped down as our HP coach at the end of last season and moved to Montreal to pursue more schooling. This has left a void until the Regional Training Center is established in 2015.

It is with great pleasure that I announce Laurie Wiltshire has accepted the role of the High Performance Coach for Judo Alberta for this year. She is an NCCP certified Competition Development (Level III) coach with years of experience as a National and International competitor. She is an 8-time National Champion in the -52kg division and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role. Furthermore, she is a certified fitness trainer and can bring more aspects of conditioning and physical preparation to the Coaching Team.

Laurie is based in Calgary, but will make club visits throughout the year and will always be available at the training camps. Please join me in extending our congratulations to her and wish her continued success in this new position.

Sincerely,

Garry Yamashita,
Coaching Committee Chair

Quebec and Ontario Open

Dear Coaches,
This year Quebec Open and Ontario Open will be back to back in November 2014. Between these two tournaments there is a national training camp at the NTC in Montreal. Both of these tournaments are regional point’s tournaments and will be a qualifier for the new Elite 8 competition in January which is the Judo Canada selection tournament for Europe in March 2015.

Judo Alberta coaching staff recommend both tournaments to U18 and U21 athletes that wish to compete at an international level this year. Also we recommend athletes have competed at nationals prior to competing at either of these tournaments.

Judo Alberta will be organizing travel to and from these tournaments, Laurie Wiltshire will need to know who will be attending and what option for travel by September 27th, 2014 (Provincial training camp) with a $500.00 deposit made out to: Judo Alberta.

Option 1: Athlete travels to Montreal on October 31st, competes at Quebec Open and travels home to Alberta on November 3rd, 2014.
Option 2: Athlete travels to Montreal on October 31st, competes at Quebec Open, trains at the national camp, travels to Toronto by bus/ or van on November 7th, competes at Ontario Open, and returns to Alberta on November 9th at night.

Each athlete has to register themselves for these tournaments online. Please tell athletes to register as Judo Alberta as their club, this eliminates our Judo Alberta athletes facing each other first round.

Quebec Open: Please go to (http://www.quebecopen.org) Registration closes on October 26th, 2014 or when registration reaches 850 athletes so please register as soon as possible.

Ontario Open: (https://www.judoontario.ca

Funding for 2014 Canadian National Judo Championships

MONTREAL, Canada. (April 11, 2014) For the second year in a row, the Canadian Judo community unites together to make sure every judoka has the funds they need to get to the Canadian Judo Nationals. MAKEACHAMP has created a unique campaign (http://makeachamp.com/CanadianNationalChampionship) where all the funds that are raised, will be split equally among athletes with campaigns for the National Championships. Clickhere (http://makeachamp.com/CanadianNationalChampionship) to visit the campaign.
Supporters:

This campaign is unique in that it gives everyone a chance to support our judokas as they prepare for the Canadian Judo Nationals. A contribution to this campaign goes a long way because the funds are split equally among athletes already raising funds – it is these athletes that need your support the most. Your contribution will propel those campaigns forward and get them focus on training rather than financing.

Athletes:

If you are a judoka and you are going compete at the 2014 Canadian National Championships, you can get a portion of the funds collected by this campaign. All you have to do is create a campaign on MAKEACHAMP (http://makeachamp.com/login) before April 25th, 2014 and you will receive a portion of the funds collected by this campaign.
