Japan 2018 Selection Standards

Judo Alberta will be taking a group of Canada Winter Games athletes to Japan 2018 for a training tour.

Approximate Dates: July 17, 2018 to August 05, 2018

Week 1: Kodokan Training Camp, Tokyo
Week 2: High School Training Camp, Katsura

Maximum of 25 Alberta athletes will be selected for this training tour

Minimum Performance Standards:
There will be funding available for number 1 ranked athletes in the Canada Winter Games Selection:

Minimum Training Standards 2017-2018 season
2 x National Training Camps
2 x Provincial Camps
BC Inter-Provincial Camp – Invermere, BC

Note: If number 1 ranked athletes are unable to meet the minimum training standards they will be provided funding to participate in the 2018 Judo Saskatchewan Summer Camp

2nd Selection: Self-Funded Athletes:

Minimum Performance Standards:
Gold Medal: 2017 Quebec Open or 2017 Ontario Open or 2018 Elite Nationals
Gold Medal in both: 2018 Pacific International & 2018 Edmonton Open
Judo Canada National H Team or better

Minimum Training Standards 2017-2018 season
2 x National Training Camps
2 x Provincial Camps
BC Inter-Provincial Camp – Invermere, BC
Alberta Inter-Provincial Camp – Canmore, AB

IMPORTANT:

There is a high percentage of randori at these training camps in Japan. Each day will comprise of 4 to 5 hours of training a day and it is important that athletes have participated in training camps provincially, inter-provincially and at national camps to help adapt to the training load. There is an expectation that Alberta athletes have full participation at these level of camps.

Judo Canada RTC athletes (out of province) and Judo Canada RTC outreach athletes can/will be invited to participate in this event by RTC head coach following the selection. The Judo Alberta Coach Committee hold the rights to recommend athletes to the team who fall outside of minimum performance standards.

Self-Funded Coaches:
Judo Alberta will accept self-funded club coaches. Club coaches who are interested in this event should attend a minimum of 2 x provincial camps, BC interprovincial camp, Alberta Inter-Provincial camp and have a minimum of 5 athletes participating at the 2018 Open National Championships.

Coaches needed to be recommended by their judo clubs to the Judo Alberta Coach Committee

Approximate Cost: $3,000.00-$3,750.00 – flights, accommodations, camp fees, train fees

Judo Alberta at the Cadet Worlds

Hello Everyone,

Joel Demaere and Kiera Westlake competed hard today in Chile at the Cadet World Championships. They both went out with the right attitude and mind set in their matches and tried to throw. Unfortunately they did not reach their goals but I am proud of the way they have approached their preparation. They went into their matches to win and tried to win! This attitude will carry them forward in future competitions.

Joel won his first match vs Armenia and lost his second to the Ukraine. Kiera lost her only match to Ecuador. They are both young will have opportunities to return to the world stage in the future.

Keegan Young from Ontario captured a bronze medal today.

Elite Athlete Funding – April 2017 to August 2017

The Judo Alberta coaching staff has released the Elite Athlete funding application.

This application is for funding for Judo Alberta/ Judo Canada events that have taken or will take place between: April 21, 2017 to August 18, 2017

Priority:
A) Athletes Selected by Judo Canada to participate in International Events
B) International Events recognized by Judo Canada (National Team
Handbook) & Judo Canada RTC International Competitions/Tours
C) National Point Events and Training Camps
D) Special Provincial Training Camps

The elite athlete funding is for athletes in age divisions U18, U21, and Senior that are travelling out of province for tournaments or training camps at a national or international level.

The Judo Alberta coaching staff is allocating $4,000.00 towards this part of the season for elite level athletes. The whole funds may or may not be completely used depending on the number of applicants and events.

Applying for this funding does not guarantee that funds will be issued to you. The coaching staff are looking for athletes that have shown dedication to their own judo training, tournament participation, and training camp participation. Also the coaching staff are looking for athletes that are planning for future goals in the sport. Please see a list of example tournaments that we will fund on the Elite athlete funding policy.

The coaching staff do want the athletes to have full support from their personal coach/ head sensei/club before applying for funds.

Judo Alberta LTAD Committee Chair Position

Judo Alberta is currently seeking a member of the association to act as the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Committee Chair to promote the theories and practices of the LTAD Model to coaches and clubs across Alberta in order to develop a standard of excellence in athlete development and lifelong participation.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1. Disseminates information on theory and technical clinics by putting notices in the Newsletter.
2. Administers the annual approved budget for LTAD programs.
3. Sends copies of all correspondence to the Secretary.
4. Assists in making decisions on funding and participation in advanced training and education courses.
5. Submits short articles to Newsletter to encourage incorporation of the LTAD program into coaching and organizational planning.
6. Facilitates attendance at and planning for LTAD related clinics.
7. Delegate’s logistical support to ensure that clinics run smoothly.
8. Prepare and submit a summary report for the Annual General Meeting.

CONTACTS AND RELATIONSHIPS:
1. Maintains contact with Judo Canada and Coaching Association of Canada in order to disseminate LTAD information.
2. Maintains contact with other provincial Judo Associations and Judo Canada in order to coordinate advanced training.

AUTHORITY LIMITS AND EXPENDITURE LIMITS:
1. Expenditures limited to the approved budget of LTAD Committee.
2. Must work within the schedule and priorities of Judo Alberta.

KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A current member of Judo Alberta.
2. NCCP Level II certified.
3. Enthusiasm for organizing people and materials.
4. Administrative ability and clerical support for preparation and review of policies, procedures and correspondence.

Team Alberta Selection policy and funding criteria for National Championships 2018

This Policy is used to develop a provincial team list for national championships. These criteria are in place because the Judo Alberta Coaching Committee wants to be sure that every member of Judo Alberta has the opportunity to participate on the provincial team, as long as they achieve the minimum requirements. The Coaching Committee wants to be sure that Judo Alberta allocated funding is being used for serious athletes at their respective age level, using the LTAD program for competitions.

2018 Judo Alberta Provincial Championship Bid Opportunity

Judo Alberta is now accepting bids for the 2018 Judo Alberta Provincial Championships. If you are interested in hosting, please provide a bid application to the Judo Alberta office in electronic form (via email c/o Nate MacLellan, Executive Director, judo@judoalberta.com) no later than Friday July 14, 2017. To be included is the following information:

• Club information for bidding club
• Venue information (must have a minimum 3 mat areas plus a warmup area)
• Seating capacity
• Number of people available to volunteer and assist in running event
• A list of previous events that your club has hosted
• Dates interested in hosting (Recommended dates are February 3rd or February 10th, 2018)
• Host hotel information
• Any additional information that might be helpful for the Executive Committee to make an informed decision

Judo Canada Awards and Recognition

Judo Alberta was well represented at the 3rd Annual Judo Canada Awards and Recognition presentation in conjunction with the Judo Canada Nationals banquet.

The Awards and Recognition Committee’s mandate is to recognize the contribution of our volunteers and athletes at all levels who meet the gold standard of commitment to our sport and are crucial to the development and advancement of Judo in Canada.

Mark Hicks

(Outstanding Shiai Volunteer Award)

Mark Hicks started judo at 10 years old in Manitoba and to this day he is still involved in the sport. He has been running the St. Albert Tokai Judo Society for the last 27 years. Using his professional management skills, he became actively involved in a community based organization that covers multiple cities in Alberta. Each year, the organization runs five regional tournaments with the intent of introducing our younger judoka to competition. It also helps prepare parents and volunteers to run the tournaments.
Mark has provided continuous leadership and direction to his group in all aspects of its operation since the early 2000’s. In 2006, they created the Edmonton International Judo Championship. Their organization worked diligently and their efforts have resulted in what is now a very-well run tournament in Canada. This event has grown from a regional base to one with international reach. In 2017, there were 925 competitors registered to compete.

Garry Yamashita

(Outstanding Board & National Committee Contribution Award)

Garry Yamashita is the President and Technical Director of the Hiro’s Judo Club. He has been in judo for 47 years and currently holds the rank of rokudan. His original sensei was Mr. Oye from Manitoba. He came to Alberta in 1981 and was a provincial team member for many years before becoming a provincial coach.
Garry is a member of the National Grading and Kata Commission for Judo Canada. He is also a member of the sub-team that revised the National Grading Syllabus this past year. He is a nationally certified kaya judge and active as a kata judge provincially, inter-provincially, and at the national championships.
Garry is also a member of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Committee for Judo Canada. His role is to help deliver the Competition Development Course and review and revise the NCCP policies as required. Garry has been certified as an NCCP Learning Facilitator and is currently working on becoming certified as an NCCP Coach Evaluator.

(Most Outstanding Referee Contribution Award)

Brian is a member of the Judo Canada Referee Committee since 2016. Since then, he has played a rolein many international competitions such as:
– Member of the Commission during the National Championship in Calgary on May 2016
– Member of the Commission and examiner for Nat A and B referee examination at Pacific International, Richmond BC, March 4-5th, 2017
– Referee at the Abierto Pan-American Open in Santiago, Chili, on March 17-19th, 2017
– Member of the Commission at the National Championships 2017 in Calgary Alberta, May 25-28, 2017/
