Edmonton International Judo Championship

The Edmonton International Organizing Committee is pleased to announce that the Edmonton International Judo Championship will take place March 14th, 15th, and 16th 2014 at our unique venue, West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

It is our opinion that this tournament will provide athletes a tremendous opportunity to obtain valuable national and international experience while limiting travel costs and associated time zone issues due to accessibility, proximity and location in North America. We believe that the tournament’s three day format facilitates travel time for all participants, as well as well placed tournament match times. It also ensures that participants, coaches and families have the opportunity to partake in the shopping and special events aspects of the largest indoor shopping center in North America, West Edmonton Mall. www.westedmontonmall.com.

For those not in attendance these past few years, the West Edmonton Mall venue, provides a unique opportunity for the display and understanding of our sport, as a result of the 100,000 + people per day walking around the enclosed but open air tournament site. Please review our website www.edmontonjudo.com for pictures of this very dynamic tournament environment.

In addition to an incredible array of competitors, over 700 in 2013, which benefit from cash prize funding for divisional winners of the Senior Women’s and Men’s Brown & Black divisions, we have a number of other events coinciding with the tournament including:

Kata Camp: This is the most popular Kata competition in Western Canada, and we want you to participate in the competition and the subsequent Kata camp! Nage-no Kata, Ju-no-Kata, Katame-no-Kata Kime-No- Kata and Kodokan Goshinjutsu are all being offered. If you wish to improve your Kata this is your opportunity! For details email Gord Okamura gokamura@telus.net

Kata Judge Seminar: If you wish to Judge Kata in the future, Judo Canada is putting on a kata Judge seminar, evaluation, and examination in conjunction with the tournament which is open to Nidan and above. Contact Fred Blaney, IJF A of Judo Canada’s National Grading Board at Fred.Blaney@gnb.ca

Referee Symposium: Run also by IJF Referees. An evening of detailed assessment of what is changing in today’s judo and how you as a ref, or you as a fighter, can adjust your game to move forward with these changes.

Pathway to the Olympic Podium: an informational session for athletes, coaches and parents put on by Judo Canada’s Ewan Beaton. Ewan is an Olympian as an athlete and as an Olympic Manager and has considerable depth of knowledge to share for interested judoka.

We have negotiated hotel packages for participants and members of their travel teams which are included in the tournament package on our website www.edmontonjudo.com . Additionally, any further information or tournament package revisions will be uploaded on our website, as they become available. If you have any questions in the short term I would be pleased to respond by email.
Please mark your calendars, adjust your budgets, and plan to travel this March 14th, 15th, and 16th 2014 to the Edmonton International Judo Championship. . . truly a unique Judo tournament experience.
