Future competitive stream grading candidates, for nidan or higher, will need to meet their kata clinic requirements (described in the National Grading Syllabus) by attending one of the designated scheduled kata clinics prior to the actual date of the grading. See the table below. Candidates will still be required to attend the waza clinic portion of the grading and to receive the Provincial Grading Board’s final decision on their\u00a0promotion.<\/p>\r\n

Future competitive stream candidates are to inform Gord Okamura at\u00a0gyokamura@gmail.com<\/a> if they are planning to register and attend a grading in the upcoming year in advance, in order to ensure a clinic is scheduled. The credit for attendance will be valid for one year from the date of the kata clinic (if before June, then good for June and November gradings). If candidates are unable to attend a clinic, then they will postpone their grading so that all requirements will be met. Attendance at a recognized clinic out of province may be considered (must be approved in advance).<\/p>\r\n

The Provincial Kata Committee is responsible for the overall teaching of kata to the judo membership and the Provincial Grading Committee will continue to evaluate the kata at the formal yudansha grading for Technical Stream candidates and Competitive Stream shodan candidates. Club senseis\u00a0and students are offered kata\u00a0clinics so that they\u00a0have a basic understanding of the current kata and\u00a0can practice at their dojo before grading. It is also recommended that candidates have a competent kata partner to ensure a successful demonstration.<\/p>\r\n

The kata clinics conducted by the Provincial Kata Committee are part of a number of kata events which are intended to\u00a0elevate the level of kata, especially for technical candidates and their senseis. It will\u00a0be important that the level of kata at any grading is high in order to recognize the importance of the black belt.\u00a0If the kata demonstrated at a Yudansha Grading is lacking, the\u00a0candidate will need to repeat before being promoted.<\/p>\r\n

  1. All candidates for Competitive and Technical stream must enter their application into the on-line system <\/span>https:\/\/judocanada.org\/grading\/<\/span><\/a> no LATER than April 23, 2026.<\/span><\/li>\r\n
  2. Refer to the Judo Alberta website <\/span>https:\/\/judoalberta.com\/index.php\/grading-kata\/<\/span><\/a> for information about black belt grading and the National Grading Syllabus. Note that competitive stream grading candidates, for nidan or higher, will need to meet their kata clinic requirements by attending one of the designated scheduled kata clinics prior to the actual date of the grading.<\/span><\/li>\r\n
  3. Competitive stream candidates going for Shodan must also undergo a formal grading.<\/span><\/li>\r\n
  4. It will be important that the level of kata at any grading is high to recognize the importance of the black belt. If the kata demonstrated at a Yudansha Grading is lacking, the candidate will need to repeat before being promoted.<\/span> Have a competent kata partner.<\/span><\/li>\r\n
  5. Candidates should obtain their head instructor\u2019s approval before making the application. Both have a responsibility to ensure the information entered is accurate and verified. Do not claim for ineligible tournaments (competitive) or for partial years.<\/span><\/li>\r\n
  6. Shodan candidates have the responsibility of ensuring their ikkyu (brown belt) registration date agrees with the Judo Alberta registrar\u2019s records (as evidenced by the Judo Alberta Certificate of Promotion). Contact the Judo Alberta Registrar if any questions.<\/span><\/li>\r\n
  7. All candidates must have a Judo Canada passport and bring it to the grading. Failure to do so will result in the application being withheld. If you need to order a passport, then go to <\/span>https:\/\/judocanada.org\/judo-canada-passport\/<\/span><\/a> \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n
  8. No electronic recording during any Yudansha grading session. However, grading sessions are open to the public.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n

    Any yudansha candidates in the Competitive Stream are reminded to contact Gord Okamura, Chairman of the Provincial Kata Committee (at\u00a0gyokamura@gmail.com<\/a>) and inform him what kata clinics they will need for their next promotion. The deadline for contacting is March 26. This only applies to Competitive Stream candidates going for Nidan and higher.
